The New Image Of....

Miss CHARLOTTE CHURCH

SSTOP PRESS! STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS!

COULD THIS BE THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR CHARLOTTE'S CLASSICAL CAREER AND ANGEL IMAGE???

NEW IMAGE OF CHARLOTTE CHURCH REVEALS THAT SHE HAS RECORDED A DANCE TRACK -

AND WE ALL THOUGHT "REAR OF THE YEAR" WAS PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES!!!

Well, Charlotte Lovers, before you go looking at the Calendar expecting to see the date is April 1st, it is NOT!

The Beta Test New Image Of Charlotte Church Fans' Website can reveal that Charlotte has recorded a Dance Track, it's actually by Jurgen Vries (a.k.a Darren Tate who also shares her Record Label) and apparently called "The Opera Song", featuring the vocal talents of "C.M.C.". When you hear the track it is fairly obvious that it is Charlotte's voice and when you hear what the lyrics are it is more than possible that Charlotte had a hand in writing them!

This is a surprise move to say the least.

Many thought that Charlotte winning and, more importantly, accepting her "Rear Of The Year" Title, was probably as far as she would dare push her New Image this year, but it appears we are wrong, as the Editor and Creator of The New Image Of Charlotte Church Fans' Website, Charlotte's Webmaster Angel admits, in an exclusive interview for the Site:

"This has come as a major surprise to everyone involved with the Site and the Group ", he stated, "when Charlotte accepted her "Rear Of The Year" Title, it was a shock to everyone, particularly her Classical Music fans as you suddenly had a sweet and innocent schoolgirl soprano who had turned into a rather sexy and beautiful young lady, and who suddenly didn't seem to be wanting to keep it to herself for any longer".

He added, "The Beta Test Site was started almost as a joke as it was assumed with this turn of events that other Charlotte Web Sites would close down because they didn't like the direction her visual image was turning, but I am happy to say they are still running", but he went on to add, "then it got serious and people have started taking this Site seriously, and with this latest turn of events, it is a concern that other Sites may close".

"This greatly saddens me if it does happen", he continued, "because I am involved in the Music Business in a minute way and it does seem to be that Classical Music fans are the most closed minded of all when it comes to issues of this nature; though it does depend on whether you are a fan of Charlotte's Music ONLY or of her herself", he concluded. "I do have a few friends who are Classical Music buffs and it sort of boils down to the fact that if it hasn't got a violin in it, it's rubbish, which I think is an awful attitude to have, but I suppose you like what you like".

He finished off by commenting, "I do feel sorry for a lot of Charlotte Church Fans, particularly those who have been following her for a long time, as to have her going from the Schoolgirl Soprano to a vivacious 16 year old beauty, who it is ALLEGED smokes, has moved in with a boyfriend - with all that that suggests, and now records a Trance Dance Music track all in the space of a year, it must take a lot of getting used to, although some of course, won't bother or won't want to, which is rather sad, but there you go - it would just be nice if they attempted to be more open-minded, particularly because it is an excellent track and deserves to go to the top of the Charts, and then, of course, we would be looking at the possibility of Charlotte on Top Of The Pops."

If you want to hear this track for yourself, click here to hear it with the Quicktime Player or in Real Player Format.

UPDATE: Charlotte made a surprise appearance on the Dave Pearce Programme on B.B.C. Radio 1 in the U.K. where she gave sat in judgement on three of the week's new releases, click here to listen to it in Real Audio. It was quite interesting as she went on to dispel Media Stories about Steven Johnson being a D.J. - he is in fact a Producer and she has nothing to do with his alleged band - "G.L.C." and "Stick It In The Cider", and apparently neither does he. Listen and enjoy it!

Charlotte's initial bid for pop success

Jan 3 2003

Anna Hammond, South Wales Echo

TEEN singing superstar Charlotte Church is destined for her first top 10 hit - and it's a real change from the norm.

Dance track Opera Song (Brave New World), which is released later this month, has already proved a hit with Radio One and Red Dragon FM listeners - even though most people don't know it is her.

For the song, which Charlotte's mother has described as "a one-off", she is using the pseudonym CMC.

The track, which is on the Radio One playlist, is by Jurgen Vries and features Charlotte's vocals.

DJ Gary Neal, who presents the Dance Masters show on Red Dragon, said: "The track has been getting a really good response and a lot of people are requesting it.

"Charlotte is singing in an opera style, but it is a trance track. All the big DJs in the UK are playing it in clubs."

Gary admitted that, at first, he did not realise the voice on the track, which comes out on January 20, was Charlotte's.

"But I had heard a few rumours, and then I saw CMC - which obviously stands for Charlotte Maria Church - on the record," he said.

"Her vocals stand out a mile and it is very good. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes the top.

Charlotte's mother Maria said: "It happened by accident.

"A record label sent her the track, asked her to sing on it and she agreed. But it is just a one-off."

Meanwhile, Charlotte is currently at her family home in north Cardiff enjoying the last of her Christmas break before she starts promoting her forthcoming-10." film - The Family Business-In it, Charlotte plays an Echo delivery girl with her sights set on becoming a singing star.

The film, set in Cardiff, was filmed in London over the summer and is due to be premiered in America in the spring before coming to Britain.

Maria said: "We expect it to be released at the end of March or the beginning of April.

"Charlotte would have liked it to be filmed in Cardiff, but it would have been too expensive because all the crew are based in London.

Charlotte hopes for chart success with

`trance track'

Jan 4 2003

The Western Mail - The National Newspaper Of Wales

CHARLOTTE CHURCH is about to take the charts by storm - with a dance track.

Although Opera Song (Brave New World) has been played by BBC Radio 1 and some commercial stations for weeks, not many music fans have realised that the vocals belong to the teenage soprano.

The track by Jurgen Vries is due to be released on January 20 and Charlotte is using her initials CMC.

DJs are already predicting that it will be a chart success which may win Charlotte a new army of fans - the clubbing generation.

Charlotte's mother Maria has insisted that the song is just a "one-off" and that her daughter is not turning her back on the opera career that has already made her a multi-millionaire.

And in the past, Charlotte has said that although she hopes to develop her musical talents as she grows older, she has always been adamant that she will not be the next Britney Spears.

In fact, although Opera Song is described as a "trance track" Charlotte is still singing in an operatic style.

As the track is played by radio stations throughout the country, Charlotte is currently resting at home in Cardiff following her Christmas tour of North America with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

But the 16-year-old will soon be back at work again promoting another new project, her first film.

She follows in the footsteps of other sing-er-actresses, such as Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue and Madonna.

The Family Business, which is due to be released this spring, was filmed in London but is set in Cardiff. Charlotte can draw on her own experiences for her role as she plays a newspaper delivery girl with her sights set on becoming a singing star.

Have your say! What do YOU think of Charlotte's "The Opera Song"/"Brand New World" Single - to quote an old cliche "A Hit Or A Miss"? Here's your chance to have your say!

The Opera Song/Brand New World Poll
What do you think will happen when Charlotte's new Dance Track is released as a Single?

It will be a flop.
It will be very popular in Clubs.
It will reach the lower end of the Charts. (75-40).
It will reach the middle of the Charts (40-20).
It will get into the Top 10.
It will go straight in at the Number One spot.
It will gradually climb and get to Number One.
It will stay in the Charts for weeks and be a big hit across Europe.
It will go straight in at Number One and straight out again the next week.
I don't care, I really prefer her Operatic material.

Charlotte bids for the Top Ten with a `one-off'

Jan 18 2003

Anna Hammond, South Wales Echo

TEEN singing superstar Charlotte Church is hoping for her first top 10 hit next week.

Her single - a dance track called Opera Song (Brave New World) - is finally released on Monday after months of airplay on radio stations.

For the song, which Charlotte's mother has described as "a one-off", she is using the pseudonym CMC.

The track, which is already on the Radio One playlist, is produced by Jurgen Vries and features Charlotte's vocals.

At Cardiff's HMV store on Queen Street have already received a batch of the singles and will spend Sunday evening putting them out on display.

The store is expecting a big demand on Monday.

A spokesman for HMV said: "We always like to give extra support to artists in their home town stores and all our stores in Wales are likely to be given prominence to Charlotte's single.

"There are high expectations for the Opera Song and it should get into the top five.

"She has worked with some top producers for this song and it is likely to do very well."

Charlotte tried to keep her involvement on the track quiet using the pseudonym which stands for Charlotte Marie Church but listeners soon recognised her vocals.

The track also has the backing of top DJ Gary Neal, who presents the Dance Masters show on Red Dragon, said: "The track has been getting a really good response and a lot of people are requesting it. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes the top 10."

Charlotte says 'no to opera' in charts bid

DOES Charlotte Church, the teen soprano turned dance track diva, think the pop business is an easier gig than the world of opera?

In a blaze of chat-show plugging, Charlotte Church's new single is released today and the Voice of an Angel star seems to suggest that a career as a pop chick might be less arduous than becoming an opera singer.

"Opera is a lot of work. If I wanted to be a proper opera singer I'd have to train for hours a day," says Charlotte, who adds she has only been to the opera once.

"Opera is beautiful and I used to like it a lot but now my taste has changed. I've got into other music."

Called The Opera Song and aimed at the pop market, her new track is a clear sign that Charlotte wants to shed her classical image. She provides the vocals on the dance track by Jurgen Vries, under her initials, CMC - with the M standing for Maria (after her mum).

Performing her new song on Des and Mel and V Graham Norton, Charlotte has replaced her elegant ballgowns with a flat cap and cut-off trousers. She declares she has no intention of recording any more opera tracks and wants to do something "really different" instead, telling Radio One's Chris Moyles show she would be writing and recording in a few months

"It won't be poppy, or dancey. It'll be R'n'B if anything," she said. "I want to do something really different, really original. It'll have nothing to do with classical."

So how do the worlds of pop and opera square up? We asked two industry insiders to give their verdict on which is the toughest.

Beverley Humphreys, opera singer

Jan 20 2003

The Western Mail - The National Newspaper Of Wales

BEVERLEY HUMPHREYS left the world of opera five years ago to go freelance after having her second child. She now sings jazz and hosts Showtime on BBC Wales Radio every Wednesday evening.

She says, "The first role that I sang with the Welsh National Opera was Rosina in The Barber of Seville and it was then I realised one has to dedicate one's whole life to opera.

"To be successful, it's extremely hard work - probably way beyond what the lay person realises. It also takes tremendous dedication.

"You need years and years of training and once you have embarked on that career, there is always a lot of work to be done on the interpretation of different roles and making sure your voice is right. It's like being an athlete. You have to keep in trim and look after yourself physically.

"One of most difficult things about opera is being faithful to the composer - interpreting what the composer wanted and not imposing yourself - while still putting of yourself into the role. It's a very fine line to walk. It takes over your whole life.

"Opera singers do party but you have to be very careful not to be in smokey atmospheres. You have to keep very fit - travelling and touring takes a great deal out of you - and you also have to keep psychologically strong because your emotional and psychological life impacts tremendously on your voice.

"Unlike any other instrument, it's part of you. If a pianist or violinist is feeling low or depressed --the instrument is still the same. But it's still marvellous being a singer. There are a great deal of pluses if you have the courage to give whatever is inside you. Once you're a singer, you're always a singer.

"Charlotte wants to have a life. Maybe she wants to have street cred but certainly the pop world is less hard work. People make spectacular careers in the pop world with, dare I say it, very little voice and very little talent. It can be about being in the right place and the money poured into pop music often creates a one-hit wonder."

Steve Jones, presenter

Jan 20 2003

The Western Mail - The National Newspaper Of Wales

STEVE JONES has presented three series of the BBC Wales programme, Pop Factory.

A member of a band himself, he says, "Charlotte is absolutely right. There is no doubt that making it in the world of pop is easier than opera. Vocally, it's definitely easier to be a pop star.

"In the pop world, any old Joe can be a pop star - they don't necessarily have to have talent. You can have someone like Samantha Fox who releases a song. Or Liverpool Football Club can make a record - a bunch of footballers are suddenly pop stars.

" I suppose it is about varying degrees of difficulty in the pop world. The band, Pulp, for example, were in the industry eight years before getting the hit, Do You Remember the First Time?

"Then you get things like Pop Idol and Pop Stars which have taken the shine off pop music for me personally. It seems anyone can get up on stage and become instantly famous."

Teenage singing star Charlotte Church plans to ditch opera for a more modern sound, it has emerged. The Voice of an Angel soprano has said she has no intention of recording any more opera tracks and wants to do something "really different" instead.

She told Radio One's Chris Moyles show she would be writing and recording in a few months. "It won't be poppy, or dancey. It'll be R'n'B if anything," Ms Church, 16, said. "I want to do something really different, really original. It'll have nothing to do with classical.

The artist formerly known as Charlotte says: 'Now I'm CMC'

Jan 20 2003

By Steve Bagnall Daily Post Staff

WELSH teenage sensation Charlotte Church wants to ditch serious music in favour of funky rock and roll.

The rebellious 16-year-old is in the spotlight once again over her decision to change musical direction from the classical style which earned her a fortune and worldwide adulation.

The star formerly know as "The Voice of an Angel" has also let it be known in a Radio One interview that in future she wants to go under the name of CMC - short for Charlotte Maria Church - as she ditches classical and opera renditions for a new rhythm-and-blues singing style.

Her first single, The Opera Song, mixed by DJ Jurgen Vries, is out in the shops today.

And the teenager has been quick to scotch weekend rumours there is a new man in her life - Jamie Shaw of the popstars band One True Voice.

Dismissing reports that she and Jamie had been holding hands in the Cafe Royal, London, she said: "It's really going to bug me and it will bug my boyfriend as well."

Jamie, too, denies any romance and insists the two, who grew up just five miles away from each other in South Wales, are just good friends.

Charlotte's love life has already caused trouble after she defied her parents to be with rap DJ Steven Johnson. She has dated the 18-year-old for more than a year.

The young star who came to international prominence at the age of 12, singing opera, said she knows her change of direction may disappoint fans and music bosses, but insists she wants a new challenge.

Charlotte, who has been in such demand that she was invited by the US President to sing at the White House, and by the Pope to an audition at the Vatican, said she now wants to write and record music with a more funky edge.

But this could place the young multi-millionaire on a collision course with her record producers.

Recently Charlotte came under fire by critics for her album Prelude: The Best of Charlotte Church. Michael White, who writes for the Sunday Telegraph and New York Times, described her as sounding like a "pre-pubescent Shirley Bassey."

Friends and fellow performers, however, leapt to her defence praising her for spreading her artistic wings.

Church tipped to top charts

Jan 24 2003

Daily Post

TEENAGE sensation Charlotte Church could top the charts this weekend, it emerged last night.

The Cardiff-based singer's dance track, The Opera Song, is reported to be selling well and is expected to have a high chart entry.

The track, mixed by DJ Jurgen Vries, marked a complete change for the singer, opting for funky rock and roll instead of the more serious music. And the rebellious 16-year-old could release a second dance single before the end of the year.

Charlotte is reported to have recorded the track when she visited Vries' studio, which could be released if executives at Charlotte's current record label agree.

Earlier this week ,the star let it be known that in future she wants to go under the name of CMC - short for Charlotte Maria Church.

Vries revealed he was behind change. He said the early secrecy was because Charlotte's management were anxious about her turning into a raver.

"But now she's fully promoting it. We may even be on Top of the Pops together next week," said Vries.

Charlotte's dance track storms charts

The track's name - 'The Opera Song (Brave New World)' - gives a hint of the old and the new Charlotte Church

22.17PM GMT, 26 Jan 2003

Once famed for her squeaky clean opera-singing image, Charlotte Church has entered the singles charts this week with a new of music.

The child star, now 16, went straight in at number three with a dance track collaboration with Jurgen Vries.

Its name - 'The Opera Song (Brave New World)' - gives a hint of the old and the new Charlotte Church.

And with the new image comes a new name, CMC - standing for Charlotte Maria Church.

Charlotte's latest hit comes in a year when the 'Voice of an Angel' star has been pictured smoking and had a high profile fall out with her mother Maria over new boyfriend, rap DJ Steven Johnson.

In a recent interview with Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, Charlotte said: "Opera is beautiful and I used to like it a lot but now my taste has changed. I've got into other music."

Charlotte pops up at No 3

Jan 27 2003

The Western Mail - The National Newspaper Of Wales

CHARLOTTE Church can now claim to be a bona fide pop star.

Her new song, recorded with dance music supremo Jurgen Vries, last night entered the BBC's official Top 40 at number three.

Entitled The Opera Song (Brave New World), this latest venture could be Charlotte's passport to an even wider international audience than she currently enjoys.

In recent weeks the 16-year-old singer has spoken of her desire to move beyond a classical repertoire and release more contemporary and personal tracks.

By choosing to explore the "trance" genre, an offshoot of dance music, she is able to continue to use her operatic skills which fit well with its euphoric, up-tempo style.

This is also the first time she has appeared in the charts with the new title CMC. This stands for Charlotte Maria Church.

Her position close to the pinnacle of the charts suggests that an enthusiastic market of new fans is waiting to be exploited.

Charlotte's mother Maria insists that her daughter is not turning her back on the opera world.

She said, "It happened by accident. A record label sent her the track, asked her to sing on it and she agreed. But it is just a one-off."

However, Charlotte told Radio One's Chris Moyles that she does not consider herself a "proper opera singer".

She said, "Opera is a lot of work. I'd have to train for hours a day. I used to like it a lot, but now my taste has changed."
