There was disappointment today as singing star Charlotte Church had to pull out of a charity event in her home city to appear on a television chat show.
The teenager had been due to unveil the winning design for the new Children's Hospital for Wales at a presentation in Cardiff.
But Ms Church, who is patron of the Noah's Ark Appeal to raise cash to build the hospital, cancelled at the last minute to go to London to appear on the ITV1 lunchtime show Today With Des And Mel, organisers of the event said.
Philip Carling, communications director for the appeal, said they had been told on Sunday night that the singer had not been able to get out of the TV commitment, despite wanting to be at the charity event.
"She has had an engagement she has been trying to get out of," he said.
"She really wanted to be here and and we were hoping she would be."
Chairman of the Trustees of the Noah's Ark Appeal Lyn Jones said: "She did try up to the last minute to be here but she has to do these things.
"It's a bit of a disappointment but she has been a great supporter."
Suzanne Mainwaring, the director of the appeal, also sang Ms Church's praises as a devoted supporter of the project.
"We understand that her record company Sony called her away for some other commitment," she said.
"It's a real shame she can't be here but we understand that she's a world class star with huge commitments."
Ms Mainwaring added there had been no time today to organise for Ms Church to send a message to be read out at the event.
ITV1 confirmed that the star will be singing on the live show today, although she will not be interviewed.
Wales is the only country in Europe without a dedicated Children's Hospital.
At the presentation today it was announced that the contract to build the first phase of the hospital had been awarded to Laing Construction Wales and West Limited.
Building work is due to start in March and it is planned that the hospital will be fully operational by the end of 2004.
The Noah's Ark Appeal has also seen support from Swansea-born Catherine Zeta Jones, and Darren Day, who raised £300,000 from his appearance on TV's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.
The Welsh Assembly also committed £4.5 million to the hospital plan.

TEENAGE singer Charlotte Church appeared on a TV chat show yesterday instead of launching the new children's hospital for Wales.
But while there was disappointment, and confusion, at Charlotte's non-appearance, it was later realised it was not her fault.
The 16-year-old star is a patron of the Noah's Ark Appeal, which has raised more than £4m towards the hospital.
Yesterday the winning design for the hospital was unveiled at a Cardiff ceremony. But Church instead appeared on the ITV1 show Today with Des and Mel, where she sang her new single Opera Song.
Later Lyn Jones said Ms Church was entirely blameless and said the Appeal had only ``assumed'' the singer would be available for yesterday's event.
Mr Jones said, "We failed to confirm to management that we wanted Charlotte to attend. Last year we asked if she would be available and assumed she would be.
"We are sorry about the confusion and apologise to Charlotte and anyone who turned up today expecting her to be there."
He added, "Charlotte has been extremely supportive of our charity. She has made numerous appearances and helped to raise lots of money for the charity so far, of which we are most appreciative."
Church gave her first solo concert in aid of the appeal.
She had telephoned Lyn Jones, the appeal's chairman of the trustees, to apologise.
Suzanne Mainwaring, the director of the appeal, said, "We understand that her record company Sony called her away for some other commitment," she said.
"It's a real shame she can't be here but we understand that she's a world-class star with huge commitments."
A spokeswoman for the singer said yesterday, "She did ring Lyn Jones this morning, and she had pre-warned him that she couldn't be there.
"It clashed with her promotional duties. She is on the Des and Mel show, and it did clash with that."
The unveiling of the design marks a significant step forward in the bid to build the first children's hospital in Wales, following months of fundraising across the nation.
The £21m hospital on the site of Cardiff's University of Wales Hospital will be built by Laing Ltd, as predicted in yesterday's The Western Mail.
It is due to be completed by June 2004, and the charity's trustees yesterday described the launch as "the day we've all been looking forward to". Health chiefs gave an assurance that the multi-million-pound project will be completed on time and within budget, and the plans were approved by the Assembly yesterday.
The shell of the building will be completed by the end of the year, with the hospital up and running by the end of 2004. The project is the culmination of an idea first mooted more than 12 years ago.
Mr Jones said, "This is a very proud moment for us. To see a project we first dreamed about more than 12 years ago become a reality today is a very special feeling."
Trustees of the Noah's Ark Appeal charity voted unanimously for the design put forward by Laing Ltd, with architects Boyes Rees.
The blueprint has also been pored by former patients, doctors, nurses, surveyors and community health councils. It builds on compulsory specifications, which included a four-floor building, comprising three child-friendly wards, including a specialist cancer ward and family accommodation.
The project has been the subject of some controversy, with some health professionals and politicians saying the scheme should have been built in Swansea rather than Cardiff.
Health Minister Jane Hutt, who was at the launch, said, "It's very important that we see this development as part of developing services for the whole of Wales."

Editor's Note: We find it amazing and not to mention hippocritical that the same organisation that no doubt enforced the contractual obligation Charlotte had to appear on one of its own Programmes, then tries to misguide the Public by suggesting Charlotte "snubbed" the Charity - we would like to suggest that Charlotte's "Style Advisors", her Management's P.R. Staff, and certain individuals at itv.com are asked to contribute a sum of money to the Noah's Ark Appeal themselves....

The winning design for a £21m children's hospital for Wales has been unveiled.
The successful company - Laing Construction Wales and West Limited - was one of four shortlisted for contract.
Building work at the University Hospital of Wales in the city is expected to start in March.
The appeal was launched in May 2000, with a target of raising £5m needed to build the first phase.
Once the money is raised, the Welsh Assembly Government will give a further £4.5m to complete the first phase of the hospital.
This will comprise three child-friendly wards, including a specialist cancer ward and much-needed family accommodation.
Singer Charlotte Church, the patron of the appeal, had been expected to unveil the design, but had to pull out owing to a television appearance commitment.
Noah's Ark Apeal trustee chair Lyn Jones said: "She did try up to the last minute to be here but she has to do these things.
"It's a bit of a disappointment but she has been a great supporter."
Campaigning
The cause has captured the hearts of people all over Wales including celebrities like actress Catherine Zeta Jones and former sportsman Ian Botham.
They took part in a marathon charity walk last year which alone raised £850,000.
Wales is the only European country that does not have a hospital specialising in the treatment of sick children.
Doctors and parents have campaigned for many years to establish a specialist unit in Wales.
The ultimate aim is to build a complete hospital which will replace existing facilities at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
The fundraising appeal has attracted considerable publicity.
In October, singer Darren Day handed over a cheque for £30,000, raised by taking part in a jungle celebrity survivor TV show, to help build a Welsh children's hospital.
The star was the third to be voted off by the public to leave the Australian bush during ITV1's I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! in September.
He raised the money from the proceeds of the audience phoning and texting the show during the 10 days he survived the game, eventually won by DJ Tony Blackburn.
Day chose to back the fund after hearing about a family tragedy affecting his girlfriend Adele Ellicott, who is from Newport.
The 22-year-old former model's brother died when he was 11, a victim of a rare illness known as Sudden Death Syndrome.
Her family are keen supporters of the campaign for a children's hospital and are said to be touched by Day's choice of charity.

Charlotte made quite a surprising appearance on "The Saturday Show" on B.B.C. 1 (U.K.) on Saturday 11th January between 0900-1200 hours.
It was quite a surprising Show to be on, as while it is classed as a "Children's Programme", it is more viewed by 14 years and upwards teenage boys and girls, and therefore not usually the age group that would be associated with buying Charlotte's Music, or in some cases, possibly having heard of her! Also interesting was her appearance on T.O.T.P. 2, clearly again aimed at teenagers and the 30+ age bracket.
At the same time, it was clearly an opportunity to push her "New Image" even further forward if she so desired, with an audience that would have either very little or no objection to her doing so, for the above reasons. She accomplished this by first appearing in jeans, boots (possibly Doc Marten's?!) and a sleeveless black top, which had a thick strap going around her neck, which considering the weather here in the U.K., (it's snowing with freezing conditions!)must have left her bare arms and shoulders feeling very cold!
Even more surprisingly was that Charlotte was also interviewed on the Programme about "Brave New World"/"The Opera Song", as well as performing the track.
The interview was very brief, but she did appear to admit for the first time that she "would not be performing the heavy opera stuff anymore"; she was also asked a couple of questions that had been E-Mailed into her from viewers, among them:
Was she still with her boyfriend? Answer: Yes.
And had he influenced her musically? Answer: No.
Charlotte was then asked to appear on "Saturday Morning Fever", which was a contest between her and "Fame Academy" Winner Mr. David Sneddon - which was a disco dancing competition of a sort! They had to "dance" to a disco tune, but in accordance with flashing squares on the podiums they were both required to stand on. Even though Charlotte danced pretty well (she seemed more concerned about the state of her top than her dancing! ; )) she actually lost (and was quite surprised at this) by four points - 48 to his 53 - she seemed to enjoy herself doing it though!
She also took part in a "singing" competition to break a glass - and changed her top! This time it quite a low cut, sleeveless strappy-beige top with her hair done up in a beige cap. (Still must have been cold!) She was again in competition with David Sneddon and a Guest from the Audience - not surpisingly she won this time! Later, while awaiting to perform on T.O.T.P. she was "behind the counter" and there drew a "picture" of Mr. Sneddon, much to her embarrassment! And his probably!!! ; )
Next, was her performance on T.O.T.P. 2, which according to them, is a "World Exclusive" of "Brave New World"/"The Opera Song".
In what can only be seen as an effort to appease her current Fan Base, Charlotte remained in her beige top, cap, and jeans for her performance. Even though she did look beautiful, it was a look out of context with the tune she was singing and for the arena she was performing in; some critics will probably describe her as looking "dowdy". Her singing was beautiful and her voice carried well; she did seem nervous at first, but soon got used to it.
It will be very interesting to see if she does get to perform on the "main" T.O.T.P. which is broadcast on Friday nights on the B.B.C.
All in all, a good performance all round, seeing a more relaxed and happy teenage Charlotte than we usually get to see, in obviously more relaxed surroundings than what she is accustomed to. Though it looks like, she has pushed her "New Image" as far as she wishes to do so, if this appearance was anything to go by.
